Excel Income Tax Filer
The Absolute Excel Income Tax Filer is the perfect, low cost, easy to use solution for MTD for Income Tax.
Using bridging software technology, the software enables self-employed people and property landlords (taxpayers), accountants, and bookkeepers to comply with the new income tax filing rules, which will be phased in from April 2026.
How does the Excel Income Tax Filer work?
The Excel Income Tax Filer lets users digitally link their quarterly income and expense information from an Excel spreadsheet directly to HMRC’s MTD for Income Tax platform. It is one of the simplest ways for taxpayers and accountants to comply with MTD.
In addition to filing the quarterly submissions, the software will also let users retrieve and amend the Business Source Adjustment Summary (BSAS) if necessary. It will also allow users to complete the annual summary to make accounting adjustments and relevant tax allowances, such as capital allowances that the taxpayer’s business may be entitled to claim.
The software can also be used to file information relating to certain non-mandated income sources. These will include Interest, Dividends, CIS, Pension Contributions, Gift Aid, Student Loans, High Income Benefit Charge and Marriage Allowance transfer. The software will then allow you to complete the MTD for Income Tax process by submitting the Final Declaration to HMRC.
The Excel Income Tax Filer is a standalone Excel-based product that can be set up in minutes; no lengthy installation is required. The spreadsheet simply needs to be downloaded on a quarterly basis. The program can also be linked to any existing spreadsheets users may have so that the information is directly imported into the relevant boxes and submitted to HMRC using our bridging software technology.
What is the bridging software component of the Excel Income Tax Filer?
MTD bridging software is recognised by HMRC as a viable long-term option for submitting data to the MTD for Income Tax platform. Bridging software allows businesses or their agents to digitally submit MTD returns from Excel to HMRC’s MTD system.
For the software to be MTD-compatible, it must be built using HMRC’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which facilitate the secure transfer of financial data via a digital link.

Who can use the Absolute Excel Income Tax Filer?
The software can be used by:
- Taxpayers – as a standalone, Excel based solution.
- Accountants and bookkeepers – as a standalone Excel based solution or in connection with other, non-MTD accounting software
As we found with our hugely successful Excel VAT Filer bridging software, accountants and bookkeepers may also want to recommend the software to their clients.
The software does not require the user to have an in-depth understanding of MTD for Income Tax or processing and filing income tax returns.
Built-in flexibility
The Excel income Tax Filer has been developed to allow users to choose which part of the MTD for Income Tax process will be carried out by the taxpayer or their accountant. The taxpayer can use the software to complete all the processes or select one or two elements before handing it over to their accountants.
Similarly, the software can be used by accountants for some or all of the processes.
